Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef:

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced into strips
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch (for coating)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 red chili, thinly sliced (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey (or brown sugar)
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (slurry for thickening)

For Serving:

  • Cooked jasmine rice or noodles
  • Sesame seeds and chopped green onions (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Beef: In a bowl, combine the sliced beef with soy sauce, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, and black pepper. Mix well and let it marinate for 15-20 minutes.

  2. Coat the Beef: Toss the marinated beef strips in 1/4 cup cornstarch until evenly coated. Shake off any excess.

  3. Fry the Beef: Heat 1/4 cup vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Fry the beef strips in batches for 1-2 minutes per side, or until golden and crispy. Remove and set aside on paper towels to drain excess oil.

  4. Prepare the Sauce: In the same skillet, add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Sauté the garlic, ginger, and red chili for 1 minute, until fragrant.

  5. Make the Sauce Base: Add the soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey (or brown sugar), and rice vinegar to the skillet. Stir in 1/2 cup water and bring the mixture to a simmer.

  6. Thicken the Sauce: Stir in the cornstarch slurry and cook for 1-2 minutes, until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.

  7. Combine Beef and Sauce: Add the crispy beef back into the skillet, tossing to coat evenly in the sauce. Cook for 1-2 minutes to heat through.

  8. Garnish and Serve: Transfer the beef to a serving plate. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions. Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
